I’ve got a friend named Jamison Wezelis who is also writing a novel. He hasn’t gotten quite as far as I have, but I see a lot of potential in his writing. I think it’s a great idea to find a friend who wants to write as much as you do. You can look at their work and make suggestions while they look at your work and give suggestions.
The key here is trust. First off, don’t just find someone on the internet who writes, send them your work and then ask to see theirs. This should be common sense, but don’t hand out your work to people unless it’s copyrighted. You don’t want your hours, days, months and even years to be stolen.
The second part of trust is this: Your friend needs to trust you enough to take ‘constructive criticism’ and you need to trust them the same way. Constructive criticism, in the words of one of my favorite teachers, is just people telling you something sucks without pissing you off.
